Egg Allergy
Egg allergy is one of the most common food allergies in children. Research have shown that almost 70% of children will get rid of this allergy at the age of 16. But it may appear later in life.
Symptoms:
- Digestive problems such as cramps, nausea and vomitting.
- Running nose and sneezing.
- Skin inflammation.
The main reason behind egg allergy is that the body's immune system sees the egg protein as harmful protein. The immune system start producing histamine and other chemicals that cause allergy. Egg whites allergy is more common but both egg whites and yellow can cause allergy.
Risk factors:
- Age
- Family history
- Skin test: A skin prick test is done by pricking the skin and exposing small quantity of protein to skin. If you are allergic to eggs a bump is produce at test site.
- Blood test: Done in lab after physician consultation.
Treatment:
Prevention is better than cure. The best way is to avoid eating eggs. Read food labels carefully. If you are eating in hotel be aware of this. Feeding mothers should avoid eggs if their children have egg allergy. In the case of severe allergy consult allergist or health care provider.
